My friend asked me how I take care of my dog, then kinda give me an idea to create this post. I have a dog. Her name is Milky, pure bred Maltese. I picked her up in Walnut Creek on 2007. The seller guaranteed that Milky would only weigh 6 pounds maximum. She's big now, about 12 pounds. But, I love her anyway. During her first year my boyfriend and me took her for vaccines quite a lot. After that, her vaccine will only due once a year. On 2008, she got sick and we took her to the nearest vet. Cost us about $400, for flu. End of 2008, she got pregnant with a Welsh Corgi named Tyson. That is my boyfriend's cousin's x-girlfriend's dog. Yes, it's that complicated. So she gave birth to 4 puppies on my birthday. 3 died and 1 survived. We named him Samson. He's still around and so does Tyson. We were so frustrated at that time for too much blood and the emotions that we felt losing those puppies and buried them by ourselves. Also we didn't have any experience that we called my friend that has a kennel back in Jakarta (and also my date leader), Andre Hermanto to guide us. We also watched YouTube tutorials. After that day, we decided to come up with a solution. Early 2010, we took Milky to get spayed. We thought that was the best decision. It was painful to see her in pain during her recovery, but other than that we're glad we did the right thing. No more heat cycle and no more pregnancy.
Milky is a spoiled princessy dog and here's how I take care of her..
-My boyfriend and me regularly take her out 4-5 times a day. She can't pee and poo inside the house. She was trained to do those outside. I heard dogs can hold for 14 hours, but we always thought it would be hard to hold pee and poo for 14 hours. When we're not around or late we usually call my brother to take her out if he's available. And we wash her feet after that every time!
-We shower her regularly once a week.
-We bought her the highest quality food. 6 stars on dog food rating website. Because I heard the ones that they sale in Walmart, Target, etc. are all full of chemicals and not good for dogs. We also give her can food sometimes and mix it with her dry food. We do not give her can food everyday, because her teeth will be weak (happened to my friend's dog) since can food has soft texture. Usually we mix the can food with her dry food. Sometimes, my boyfriend gives her real bones that's boiled.
-NO corn, chocolate, onions for dogs please!
-Dingo, Kong, treats and cookies from dog boutique. All kind of treats and bones except the smelly one. The bull stick or something I forgot the name.
-We play with her regularly. Toys and balls.
-I used to put clothes on her but not anymore. I found out she felt uncomfortable with clothes, so I took them off.
-She sleeps with us. No dog bed necessary.
-NO CAGE. Not even one day we put her inside a cage.
This is just my suggestion, but if you think you want to have a dog because he/she is cute. Think again. It is a life time commitment to take care of them. It is more than just petting them, taking them to shopping center, and etc. But, I do agree that dogs are humans' best friends. Imagine you are tired and when you come home, they always welcome you with their wiggling tails. When you're sad, they would sit next to you to accompany you. That, my friend, is priceless.
Tyson. Milky. Samson
